Indian Society for Action and Research (ISAR) is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 with registration number 01111HA. Founded by a group of researchers in August 2002, ISAR is dedicated to rural development in Uttarakhand, with a vision to become a scientific institution excelling in rural development initiatives. The organization aims to develop technologies and processes to achieve self-sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.

Organizational Background: Established in 1997 by a group of researchers committed to Uttarakhand's development, ISAR operates as a voluntary organization. Mr. Abhishek Joshi currently leads the organization, supported by a team of grassroots workers. ISAR emphasizes creating awareness among marginalized groups, especially women and farmers, to understand their needs and develop solutions for their self-development and self-reliance. The organization focuses on income generation activities, forming self-help groups, assisting farmers in cash crop cultivation, and addressing cultural and environmental issues.

Programs and Achievements: ISAR has undertaken various programs aimed at rural development, as outlined in Table 1.1. These programs include Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRAs), awareness camps, training and formation of women Self-Help Groups (SHGs), demonstrations on modern agricultural techniques, computer and information technology training, organic vegetable production, bio-fertilizer production, art and craft training, and vocational training for women. These initiatives have significantly impacted the lives of rural communities, with achievements such as the establishment of seed banks, training of SC women in terracotta art, and income generation through various vocational training programs.

Financial Support: ISAR's programs have been funded through donations from organizations, government schemes, and private donors. The organization has received financial assistance from various sources, including government departments, educational institutions, and corporate entities. These funds have been utilized for conducting surveys, organizing awareness camps, providing training, and implementing development projects in rural areas.

Vision

The vision of ISAR is to transform into a scientific institution committed to excellence in rural development, striving to develop innovative technologies, materials, and services to enable self-sustainable livelihoods.

Mission

ISAR's mission is to bolster the rural economy of Uttarakhand by accelerating income generation programs for marginalized communities, including women, SC/ST, and the village poor. The organization aims to bring about grassroots changes in agriculture, allied sectors, and non-farm sectors to provide basic amenities and create self-employment opportunities, thus curbing migration.

Strategy

ISAR identifies pressing issues in remote rural areas and underprivileged communities and devises community-based programs to uplift them. The organization collaborates with government institutions, corporate partners, private companies, and donors to support its initiatives through donations, technical assistance, and educational support. ISAR works closely with its partners to provide organizational support and conducts surveys and research to gain ground knowledge and address community needs effectively.

ISAR's Journey Towards Sustainable Development

In the foothills of the majestic Himalayas, amidst the vibrant tapestry of cultures and landscapes, Indian Society for Action and Research (ISAR) has been weaving threads of change since its inception in August 2002. With a vision to empower communities and foster sustainable development, ISAR embarked on a transformative journey, leaving an indelible mark on the socio-economic fabric of the region.

Cultural Resonance: As the sun cast its golden rays over the valleys, ISAR initiated the Amrit Mahotsaw, a series of meetings and workshops aimed at celebrating the rich tapestry of cultural heritage. From folk dances to traditional crafts, the communities resonated with joy, embracing their identity with pride. These events not only fostered cultural unity but also served as platforms for dialogue and understanding among diverse communities.

Technological Innovation: In a bold step towards embracing modernity, ISAR introduced a pioneering drone program. The whirring drones soared high above the verdant forests, mapping terrains, and monitoring environmental changes. This technological marvel not only showcased ISAR's commitment to innovation but also enabled precise data collection for informed decision-making, heralding a new era of environmental stewardship.

Environmental Conservation: Recognizing the urgent need for environmental conservation, ISAR launched the Harela program. Amidst the verdant forests and cascading streams, communities came together to plant saplings, nurturing the land that sustains them. Through awareness campaigns and hands-on initiatives, ISAR instilled a sense of responsibility towards nature, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

Community Engagement: Venturing beyond borders, ISAR facilitated exposure visits to Pantnagar, forging bonds of collaboration with local farmers. Amidst the bustle of agricultural festivals, knowledge flowed freely, transcending boundaries and fostering mutual learning. These exchanges not only enriched agricultural practices but also strengthened community ties, laying the foundation for collective prosperity.

Capacity: In its relentless pursuit of empowerment, ISAR continued to empower communities through departmental workshops. From agricultural techniques to administrative skills, knowledge became a beacon of hope, illuminating pathways to progress. Through these initiatives, ISAR nurtured a cadre of empowered individuals, equipped to drive change from within.

Safety and Security : In a region prone to natural disasters, ISAR took proactive measures to address fire safety concerns. From awareness campaigns to hands-on training sessions, communities were equipped with the tools and knowledge to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of lives and livelihoods. Through collective action and preparedness, ISAR forged a shield of resilience against adversity.
